CPSO conducts seatbelt checkpoint

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a seat belt checkpoint at an undisclosed location in the parish on Saturday, May 19. 

“Studies and statistics make it clear that buckling up is very important for your safety,” says Sheriff Mancuso.  “According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seat belts save over 13,000 lives every year.”

Mayor Chris Duncan has announced that the intersection of Parish Rd./Owens St./S. Crocker St. will be closed to thru traffic beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 and will remain closed for approximately 24 hours. 

The closure is required for the Parish Road Sewer Force Main Relocation.

The Calcasieu Parish Public Library will offer Summer Reading Programs for all ages in June and July. Registration for the reading programs will begin on May 29 at 11 host library locations.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

The annual SRP Kick-off Celebration will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 8 at Prien Lake Park Harbor’s Edge Pavilion. This celebration will feature a magic show by Geebo the Clown, cookie decorating, dress-up booth, temporary tattoos, face painting, bookmark creations, balloon art, and more. The Friends of the Library will sell SRP T-shirts for $7.00 and book bags for $2.00 at the Kick-off.

Ledet lands in top 3, homecoming set for Saturday

The 20-year-old Westlake native earned a top 3 slot on ‘American Idol' and a ticket to perform in SWLA.

On Wednesday Joshua Ledet earned a standing ovation after he sung It's a Man's World by James Brown and You Raise Me Up by Josh Groban.

Judge Randy Jackson, a fellow Louisiana native, called Ledet, "one of the best singers ever on this show."

Judge Jennifer Lopez took the compliment further, telling Ledet, "I think you're one of the best singers I've seen in 50 years."
